The Little Mermaid illustrations and Book Cover Design

Andersen’s The Little Mermaid has a soft spot in my heart, as it is a poignant tale exploring the themes of self-awareness, boundary-crossing, betrayal, and sacrifice. This school project (2019) allowed me a chance to develop my digital illustration skills through creating black and white line-art and applying colours afterwards with digital print-making techniques.

The main illustration captures the moment when the tail of the little mermaid transforms into human legs. The dark-green colour scheme and the soft fluid lines give the whole piece a sense of melancholy and tenderness, two important qualities that have helped steal the hearts of its audience for centuries.
